WHAT
CCALS is a state-supported Logistics Center of Excellence under the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority.
CCALS is the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems, a unique collaboration between industry, government and universities designed to deliver transformational improvements to logistics systems.
It is an applied research center that bridges the gap between fundamental research that is typically performed at universities, and product development that is routinely performed by companies. Its goal is to accelerate the transition of technologies from fundamental developments through proof of concept and on to commercialization. CCALS’ industry-led, university-implemented applied research capability also focuses on solving problems of practical importance and relevance to industry and government.
Industry sets the agenda at CCALS, leveraging university expertise and real-world experience to solve logistics challenges that arise as complex technological, mechanical and human systems interact.
University partners of CCALS bring outstanding capabilities and research depth in logistics-related disciplines. They also provide access to the best and brightest engineering, business and IT students who will compose tomorrow’s logistics workforce.
CCALS’ location, too, provides partners with unique access to an experienced, skilled and highly qualified talent pool. Central Virginia is home to the US Army Logistics University, Amazon distribution centers and significant UPS and FedEx operations. It is also headquarters to Fortune 500 companies with sophisticated logistics operations, including Dominion Energy, Performance Food Group Co., Owens & Minor, Altria and others.
