UVA’s Heimir Thorisson received the 2017 Best Presentation Award this month in Finland at RISK2017, the Society for Risk Analysis Third Nordic Chapter’s Conference. Thorisson, a PhD student in Systems Engineering, presented Influence of risk scenarios in port operations on supply chain resilience at the conference Nov. 2-3, 2017. UVA Professor J.H. Lambert co-authored the work.
The presentation highlighted the importance of risk management in the port environment, where larger vessels and increased cargo volumes must be accommodated without compromising quality, security or safety. Thorisson demonstrated modeling that evaluates risk using an optimization method that holds promise for port owners and operators as well as shipping lines, trucking and rail companies, and local authorities.
Thorisson’s efforts are sponsored in part by the Port of Virginia, CCALS, US Army Corps of Engineers, Virginia Transportation Research Council, US Dept of State Fulbright Scholar Program, and a National Science Foundation Grant.
