A group of UVA Systems Engineering students and instructors visited the Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) Nov. 8, 2017 along with CCALS Executive Director Mark Manasco, as part of an ongoing project with the Port of Virginia. UVA Systems and Information Engineering graduate student Ayedh Almutairi led the group on a logistics-oriented tour of cranes, warehouses, check-in and check-out points.
The Port of Virginia has leased the RMT from the City of Richmond since 2010. Recent highlights of the partnership include the Richmond Express Barge, designed to carry container cargo, thereby reducing congestion and wear and tear on Virginia highways; and an agreement with Panattoni Development Company, Inc., one of the world’s largest full-service development companies, to build a new state-of-the-art distribution center.
UVA has worked with the Port in a three-year logistics project that includes strategic plan analysis, data analytics and simulation modeling and analysis.
