CCALS: Empowering you through world class logistics

Levels and Benefits of CCALS Membership

CCALS members represent the full spectrum of logistics operators, including manufacturers, transportation companies, suppliers, technology firms, service providers and government agencies.

Members work with experts from leading universities to tackle pressing logistics challenges. Organizing University Members include Longwood University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University.

Business and government organizations join at several levels:

Organizing Industry Members

Organizing Industry Members (OIMs) join CCALS during its formative stage and take a leadership role in its development. OIMs have a seat on the board of directors, which sets overall CCALS governance policies, strategy, structure and fees. The board also approves new CCALS members.

Additionally, one representative from each OIM serves on the CCALS Industrial Operations Board and its Technical Advisory Council.

Finally, OIMs participate in both generic and directed research.

Tier 1 Industry Members

Tier 1 Industry Members have significant influence on the CCALS research agenda and its activities. One representative from each Tier 1 member serves on the Industrial Operations Board, and another serves on the Technical Advisory Council.  These committees oversee daily operations and develop the CCALS research roadmap.

Tier 1 members participate in both generic and directed research.

Tier 2 Industry Members

Tier 2 Industry Members are able to access the results of the CCALS generic research pool and capitalize on the networking opportunities within the CCALS environment. Tier 2 members elect one representative to serve on CCALS’ Industrial Operations Board and one to serve on the Technical Advisory Council. These committees oversee daily operations and develop the CCALS research roadmap.

Tier 3 Industry Members

Tier 3 members make applicable “in-kind” contributions to CCALS and take advantage of the networking opportunity created by the CCALS collaborative environment. Tier 3 members elect one representative to serve on the Technical Advisory Council.

Government Associates

Government organizations, laboratories and agencies seeking active participation in CCALS and that can bring value to CCALS industry partners are invited to join as Government Associates. Government Associates are not asked to contribute financially, but are expected to establish Cooperative Research and Development Agreements or other formal arrangements with CCALS. Government Associates advise CCALS on technical roadmaps, workforce development programs, prospective industry and university members and other activities. In some cases, Government Associates will provide access to facilities or programs and collaborate with CCALS on economic development activities.

Benefits

Membership and association benefits include:

Organizing Industry Members are engaged at the beginning of CCALS development and can influence its initial organization, management, vision, and plans. Organizing Industry Members are granted the right to appoint one voting member to the CCALS Board of Directors. All members of the CCALS Board of Directors are eligible to be elected Chair of the Board. The Board of Directors will have overall responsibility for CCALS including election of CCALS officers, approval of budgets, development of strategic plans, and approval of new CCALS members. Organizing Industry Members also receive all of the additional rights and privileges provided to all Tier 1 Industry Members.

Organizing Industry Members and Tier 1 Industry Members are each granted the right to appoint one voting member to the CCALS Industry Operations Board and the CCALS Technical Advisory Board. The Industry Operations Board provides the daily oversight of the CCALS while the Technical Advisory Board provides the technical vision and guidance for CCALS. Specifically, the Technical Advisory Board will create a technology roadmap for CCALS and will recommend research to be undertaken. The Industry Operations Board will approve research projects, oversee hiring of research staff, and provide general oversight of the CCALS facilities, organization, and activities.

Organizing Industry Members and Tier 1 Industry Members are given the right to participate in both Directed Research and Generic Research. Directed Research is that research performed by CCALS exclusively under the direction of, and for the benefit of, one specific CCALS Organizing Industry Member or Tier 1 Industry Member. CCALS works with the Member to create a research team that will be dedicated exclusively to the Directed Research of that Member. The results of Directed Research are owned exclusively by the Member that funds the Directed Research.

Generic Research is that research performed for the shared benefit of all CCALS Members. The CCALS Technical Advisory Board will recommend to the CCALS Industry Operations Board the Generic Research that will be performed. All CCALS OIMs, as well as Tier 1 and Tier 2 Industry Members, will have non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free rights to the results of Generic Research that are developed while a company is a CCALS member.

Tier 2 Industry Members access the results of the CCALS generic research pool and capitalize on the networking opportunities within the CCALS environment. Tier 2 members elect one representative to serve on CCALS’ Industrial Operations Board and one to serve on the Technical Advisory Council. These committees oversee daily operations and develop the CCALS research roadmap.

Tier 3 members make applicable “in-kind” contributions to CCALS and take advantage of the networking opportunity created by the CCALS collaborative environment. Tier 3 members elect one representative to serve on the Technical Advisory Council.
